How to meet the RGPD in bbPress

Do not forget, bbPress is also WordPress but interestingly almost nobody has remembered that this system forums also has to adapt to the General Data Protection Regulations (RGPD).

And the truth is that there is not much, although it makes sense.

Privacy policy

There is not much because you do not need a tool specific for the privacy page because bbPress is a plugin for WordPress, then with the tool included in WordPress you already have it .

Yes you have to add the specific information of the data that you collect in your forums , which at least are:

  • Username
  • User email
  • IP address

Cookies

You also do not need anything specific for cookies because any cookie plugin you already have and cum pla with the RGPD also applies to bbPress .

Data availability

The same goes for data export, a priori, but not, here nobody has remembered bbPress ]because in principle WordPress does not export data from bbPress forums.

So on this occasion we do need help.

For this, luckily, there is a plugin, bbPress GDPR that adds the bbPress compatibility with WordPress data export and deletion tools .

When installing and activating it, the data export may include:

  1. Forums (Deletion / export if requested by a user)
  2. Discussions (Deletion / exportation if requested by a user)
  3. Answers (Deletion / exportation if requested by a user)

In this way we can already comply with this part of the RGPD.

Anonymized data

But it turns out that bbPress captures and, above all, it shows by default the IP of the users of the forums and that is because it captures them.

Here we can do 2 things:

  • Continue capturing IPs and inform the user before registering in the forum and in our privacy policy page
  • Do not capture IP addresses.

For this last one I have not found any plugin, but you can add this custom function to your customizations plugin that, now, will anonymize your users .

Actually the function does not erase or avoid the capture of the IPs, what it does is that they are all 127.0.0.1, which is the same as not collecting them, when assigning a generic to all users.

] A fix? Yes, but the goal is achieved, which is what matters.

And nothing else. If you know of any other way to comply with the RGPD in our forums bbPress and it's slow to tell us in the comments.

I close the forums, to create community

Well yes, although it sounds incongruent that is the reason for the closure of the WordPress Help forums: create community . You have your explanation, of course.

Do you feel like doing a bit of (brief) history of the WordPress community in Spanish?

It seems like a lie, but 8 years ago the WordPress community was not even asomo of what has become today . There was some heroic blog that offered information about WordPress when it could, a group of Google that combined the efforts of those who did translations of WordPress into Spanish and little else.

In those years the people who collaborated with the effort to grow the WordPress community was counted on the fingers of one hand, and spoke of people like Angeles Portillo, Luis Rull, David Carrero, Rafa Poveda or Reyson, most still struggling to make WordPress take the place that deserves in the Hispanic community.

If you needed WordPress support you had to go to generic forums for bloggers or the WordPress.com forums where they kindly reminded you that they did not support WordPress hosted on your own server (in case it needed another reminder that it is a product of the Automattic company)

In fact, the creation of WordPress Help was aimed at covering that gap information and help in Spanish in passing that we used to the editors to have written somewhere that we were learning from WordPress, as an online notebook or something like that. What things!

But a month after opening the blog we saw that something more was needed because there were many users who had the need to ask questions about WordPress not related to what was posted on the blog, so we opened the forums, initially with the software phpBB a reputed, veteran, and above all free system.

<p> It was a few intense months, a lot of work, and also a lot of good people help, because maintaining a forum is always a huge task, especially when you are the only one that covers the offer in a niche, which was the case at that time. [19659003] Much later, I decided to launch myself and <strong> use bbPress, the WordPress forums software </strong>for the purpose of unifying everything and supporting the entire WordPress ecosystem, and although things are always lost along the way, the result was that we had support on WordPress with WordPress software, a kind of perfect circle. </p>
<p> <a href= foro-ayudawp-bbpress "width =" 838 "height =" 585 "srcset =" https://ayudawp.com /wp-content/uploads/2015/08/foro-ayudawp-bbpress-840x586.png 840w, https://ayudawp.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/foro-ayudawp-bbpress-550x384.png 550w , https://ayudawp.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/foro-ayudawp-bbpress.png 1020w "sizes =" (max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px "/> </a> </p>
<p> In those days, in fact it does not do so much either, <strong> there was no translation of bbPress </strong> either, so I also <a href= got into it as with so many other things before, but the important thing was that the WordPress community in e spañol grow and prosper.

Later, when bbPress became a plugin, taking advantage of one of the many migrations it has suffered Help WordPress I migrated the old independent forums to bbPress plugin , and the thing did not go wrong: nothing was lost and it was won in integration with the blog.

 foro-ayudawp-nuevas "width =" 838 "height =" 441 "srcset =" https : //ayudawp.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/foro-ayudawp-nuevos-840x442.png 840w, https://ayudawp.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/foro-ayudawp- new-550x290.png 550w, https://ayudawp.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/foro-ayudawp-nuevos.png 1343w "sizes =" (max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px "/> </a> </p>
<p> And so on until today … </p>
<p> What has happened since then is that <strong> the WordPress community in Spanish has grown a lot </strong>and today this does not seem anywhere near that páramo that was a few years ago. </p>
<p> <strong> With the push of a The few now we are many, and with desire to collaborate </strong>. More and more companies are betting on WordPress, today there is no hosting company that does not have specialized specialized hosting for WordPress, and many of them even collaborate with the community. </p>
<p> <a href= wordpress españa

And in that way, a stable WordPress translation community was created, we got an official blog for Spain WordCamps and Meetups in half of Spain, including some ] official forums in Spanish . To this day it can be said that the WordPress community in Spain is in very good health . And that is the question to which the reason for this decision brings me.

The objective of the WordPress community is to unify resources help the user and that WordPress remains king and free, and for that you have to stop having franchises embassies or whatever you want to call them.

The times have passed when there were several translations of WordPress and we were all free. Today there are more people participating, helping in the official forums, creating blogs about WordPress, and even a growing community of collaborators in Slack . And if the path traveled by WordPress Help and this veteran blogger has served as something for WordPress to continue growing, it's time to take a step forward .

And I think the right way is to unify the support in the official forums of WordPress.org, that does not depend on which this blog (or another one) follows alive so that the users have support in definite.

For that reason, I have decided to close the forums of Help WordPress . I'm not going to erase them, they're still here for consultation but closed for new consultations, which should be done right now in the official WordPress.org support forum in Spanish, this:

 WordPress Forums Spanish

WordPress Forums English

So what it's all about is helping and collaborating in the official WordPress support forums in Spanish where you'll also find me participating and helping, as always.

It's more , I encourage all those who have WordPress forums in Spanish to do the same thing so that does not disperse the information among several sources, or that it is lost if some day you stop having time to keep them.

I think that's what you're playing, do not you think?

User mentions in bbPress

The plugin for creating forums, which integrates wonderfully with BuddyPress does not inherit this great functionality at the moment but, as long as it does not join the bbPress kernel or plugins appear that facilitate it, ] can be easily added by a simple function .

You just have to add the following code to the file bp-custom.php of the BuddyPress installation:

] Once you save the changes you will be able to use those nice and practical mentions to users also in the forums of your social network created with BuddyPress.

Link Shield, protection against the Google Tax

 Link Shield

Next September will begin to apply the fee known as Rate Google. In what consists is that if you link a website giving some information about what is in it (summary or mention), you have to pay a fee. In the event that the fee is not paid, they could be sanctioned with a fine ranging from € 300 to € 30,000.

In theory, no Spanish page that is linked, can waive this fee , But what is the problem? That only the members of AEDE and CEDRO will share the benefits. For example, any site that copied WordPress Help, should pay that fee to AEDE and CEDRO, but the owner of WordPress Help would not see even one euro, since he is not a member of these associations. But do not forget that they are going to start with the associates, since charging them all, for everything, is sure to bring them many problems.

Next September, this new law will be put into operation if no one turns back or prevent it, which nobody knows, at that moment they will begin to look for backlinks to the associates and to send requests for the rate.

What can we do? Well, the solution is to eliminate all links to the members of these two associations, but it is clear that taking into account that there are about 86 members, it can be complicated. If you have comments open, like the vast majority, even more complicated, and if you use BuddyPress or bbPress, it is impossible to manage, since how many users may have made mentions to partner pages?

The solution goes through the use of the free plugin Link Shield . This plugin will automatically remove all the links you have to these associations in the entries, comments, BuddyPress, bbPress as in all sub sites of a WordPress Multisite installation, well, thanks to this free plugin you can save yourself a scare of thousands of euros.

The time to install and activate it, is now since the backlinks should disappear so they can not find you in September. If you wait for the implementation of the law, it may be too late.

The operation of this plugin is very simple, it is installed, it is activated and ready, no necessary configuration, although in future versions it will come with surprises. At the moment you activate it, all the links to the associates that are in entries, comments, BuddyPress activities or bbPress forums, will be deleted, please note, they will not be deleted from the database, they will not be shown. At any time you can disable this plugin and everything will remain as it was before its activation.

Remember, the no install it now and activate it, it may mean that in September you regret it or you are safe at 100 % that in any part of your site there is a link to one of those 86 websites? I would not play it.

bbPress and BuddyPress are updated to WordPress 3.8

It has not taken long for to update bbPress and BuddyPress for full compatibility with WordPress 3.8, so that everything works and flows naturally and perfectly.

bbPress the plugin for create forums in WordPress has updated version 2.5 so that it has full compatibility with the new features of WordPress 3.8, without affecting the normal operation of the plugin.

For its part, BuddyPress has also updated the version 1.8 to be compatible with WordPress 3.8, but yesterday there has been a major innovation, and has already released the version 1.9 with important developments, which I take to summarize:

In both cases, it is highly recommended update to have the best.

bbPress 2.4 next week with interesting news

logo bbpress The plugin to create a community of forums in WordPress, bbPress, will come to version 2.4 next week and will incorporate some more interesting news.

Right now is already available the first RC version ( release candidate ) of bbPress 2.4, which is important to test to review any possible failure and notify before the final version.

The fundamental novelty that bbPress 2.4 will incorporate is the incorporation of hierarchical, nested responses allowing you to choose between viewing responses by pages or nested, similar to WordPress comments.

It's a really interesting review, which does not you must let pass once the definitive version is available.

Notifications on bbPress • WordPress Help

The WordPress forums system, bbPress, works for all sizes of forums, it is easy to manage and use, but it must be recognized that it lacks advanced functions that do have more veteran forums systems

. those are the plugins, which we can also add, specific to bbPress.

One of them is bbpress notices which adds the possibility of leaving notices of the administration in the forums. For this, after installing it, you have a new type of input – so you do not have to research or learn anything new – to create notes that you can assign to be seen in all forums.

You just go to the menu " ] Notices "under the main forums menu and there you create the ads you want.

bbPress 2.3

The plugin for creating forums in WordPress, bbPress has just been updated to version 2.3, with hundreds of solutions to failures and a significant number of improvements, enough to contemplate the change of version, especially if you use BuddyPress.

It is not a full age majority, at least how I would like it, but important developments and improvements are important

bbPress 2.3 almost ready

Today it seems that it is announcement day, and the next one is that the version RC1 of bbPress 2.3 the plugin that adds forums to WordPress, has just come out. In fact are all tickets closed so it is warm and warm.
