Use WordPress as if it were Ghost

Surely you will already know Ghost a content management system very oriented to the creators, with the fundamental thing, removing everything what is left over in a CMS. Come on, a WordPress for bloggers .

And the truth is that it is very cute, works well, and falls in love with its use, precisely because of its simplicity.

Its fundamental characteristics are basically these:

] The Ghost editor

It is a double screen editor. You have the entry (the post) in two panels. In the one on the right you have the preview of what you are doing, and on the left the editor, without visible buttons or anything.

 new entry ghost

[19659005] Ghost has no visual editor, but uses Markdown to write, the shortcuts of format that we already know and use in WordPress to give styles to your site as you type. You can put something between asterisks (*) for italics, or between double asterisks (**) for bold.

For a list you simply start the line with an asterisk and space (*) and it is done alone, and for the numbered ones you start the lines with the number 1, a point and a space and leave alone, as in WordPress since version 4.3.

You can also put title styles by putting two, three, four, etc. pads (#) and a space before the text, just like in WordPress too.

To link to a URL is simple, if you simply paste the URL it is already shown with a link, such as https: // helpwp .com . And if you want to customize the text of the link you have to open the bracket, put the text inside, close the bracket; for example: [Nombre del sitio a enlazar]then open parentheses, type or paste the URL, and close it.

To insert images is very similar to links, but with a couple of changes, one of them very obvious:

  1. In parentheses you put the URL of the image instead of the URL of a site
  2. Before the first bracket, where in this case goes the title of the image, you put an exclamation mark "!" (Without the quotes clear )

To quote text in a format other than normal text just start a line with the ">" symbol and the text you want, again just like in WordPress.

Putting a text in code format is so simple how to put inverted simple asterisks before and after the code (those that are to the right of the p on a Spanish keyboard, and it goes like this: this is a code .In this case the system is the same as in the forums, just in case it sounds to you.

 ghost editor

And if you want to put a code out there then before you start putting it you simply start the line with 4 spaces before pasting it into the editor. It is a curious but easy-to-remember system and it works very well.

A curious and wonderful thing about the Markdown is that, if you want, you can write HTML code directly and, as you are actually in an HTML editor, you will see the HTML output instead of code, so you can use HTML like any code editor and the result will be displayed

Defined in one word: simplicity. You have just enough to write and little more.

From the screen of access to the administration you can see that nothing is left over. Then the thing does not change much. I leave you some captures so you can see that you can not be more spartan.

Mola huh? it's more, do you want to use WordPress like that? Well, you can …

Ghost is cool, but it has an important downside, and it is the installation requirements, since works with Node.js and (still) most of the companies or offer Node.js as default software in their usual hosting plans, which we can afford to pay for the ordinary of mortals.

For many We Ghost is still further from our reach than we would like, basically for technical reasons. So, or you are looking for a hosting that includes it in your plans, or at the moment you can use WordPress as if it were Ghost that's nothing.

Gust, turning WordPress into Ghost

You just have to install Gust a great plugin that turns your administration and editing of WordPress content into a kind of Ghost clone but with improvements this is WordPress of course.

of the general minimalist aspect of Ghost, the super spartan administration and the double screen editor, Gust also offers some of those without which we no longer know how to live:

  • Auto-save
  • Featured image
  • Support of ticket types custom
  • Categories
  • Upload and insertion of images in the entries
  • Publish schedule

Better not?

And on top it is very well achieved, and if not look at these captures. As always, you can install it, try it, if you like what you leave and if you uninstall it. That's what WordPress has right?

How to disable shortcuts in the format of the WordPress visual editor • WordPress Help

As you already know from WordPress 4.3 the format shortcuts have been introduced in the visual editor , that allow to give style to your text while you write without needing to resort to the icons of the editor's toolbar format.

The truth is that they are a blast, and I think it's an improvement very important, because they allow to apply styles of lists, titles and quotes in the fastest possible way, as you can see in this animated image:

 shortcuts format editor wordpress

Now, there are people out there, almost people I would say, who does not like, who prefers to apply formats to the traditional style: select text, click on corresponding icon; and you have to please everyone.

If you're one of those strange characters, take note, because you can turn off the formats, you just have to get involved with a bit of code . Open the file functions.php of the active theme or your utilities plugin and add the following code:

Save the changes and you will have disabled the format shortcuts the automatic Markdown from the visual editor of WordPress. The rest will continue to work as usual.

And you?

October CMS, back to the basics • WordPress Help

 octobercms logo

Last Friday a new content management system came out that promises to return the web creation and publication to the basics : October CMS .

According to the philosophy of October CMS created by Alexey Bobkov and Samuel Georges the current systems they have become complicated, and it offers us a simple platform, by which, for example, we can easily create a template on the topic and apply the URL directly, something that would be done like this:

October CMS is based on PHP and the framework Laravel and its main features are the following:

:: Installation with assistant ::

The requirements to install October CMS are as follows:

  • PHP 5.4 or higher with safe_mode disabled.
  • PHP PDO.
  • PHP cURL.
  • MCrypt PHP
  • PHP ZipArchive

Although the list seems long, most current servers already offer it, but you should always check beforehand.

If your server complies requirements, you just have to download the installer or download a copy from the repository .

If you choose the installer, the best option, the procedure is as follows:

  1. Prepare an empty directory on your server . It can be a sub-directory, the root folder or a subdomain.
  2. Download the installer file .
  3. Unzip the installer file in the directory of your server where you want to install October CMS. [19659030] Give write permissions to the installation directory and all its subdirectories and files
  4. Navigate to the script install.php from your web browser
  5. Follow the instructions of the installer.

:: Page Components ::

Components are page building blocks. Simply add a component to the page and this adds new features and then you configure it with the Inspector, a visual tool with which to manage the properties of the components, all without having to program.

:: Extensible platform: plugins ::

As with any other CMS you can extend the features of October CMS with plugins. The classes that use the plugins are very simple, simply describe the plugin and register the features you want to have.

There is a page available with a few fundamentals, which you can not do without.

] octobercms plugins

:: Ajax Framework ::

The AJAX framework frameworkword allows you to easily make a request for forms or buttons. These requests are managed by the components of your own page code or design.

:: Simple administration ::

Although not what you expect in WordPress if that has an administration interface with good virtues. The best thing is that it uses very little PHP code and the configuration files are simple, almost human.

:: Templates based on text files ::

Pages, designs and partials are just files, one per template. Thanks to this the themes are easily manageable by means of systems of revision of versions like Git or SVN.

 octobercms system files

The structure of the subjects is quite simple: [19659029] Pages – entries and pages of the website.

  • Partials – reusable HTML markup chunks. This is one of the best features of October CMS.
  • Designs – the files that define the look of the web.
  • Content files – text blocks, HTML or Markdown that can be edited independently of the page or layout
  • Resource files – resource files such as images, and CSS and JavaScript files.
  • A typical structure of a October CMS theme would look like this:

    themes /
    web /

You have the complete documentation on issues of October CMS on this page .

Do you want to know more ?, then take a look at this video it explains itself and it's a good review.

I'm testing it on my local machine and, although it changes the working method that I'm used to, I have to say it's very easy to use and modify, it has very interesting concepts.

you tell us what you think.

Markdown for WordPress – Reference Guide

     hate markdown wordpress

As you already know, one of the novelties of JetPack, also incorporated into blogs, es the Markdown or dialing system " simple " that allows you to format texts without using HTML or the wonderful buttons of the visual editor WYSIWYG (what things)

Well, even though I personally do not like the Markdown because it seems to me a backwardness, a distraction and I do not know how many more things, there are people who can make a difference, for example: [19659005] If your WordPress administrator has disabled the visual editor and you want to apply formats more easily than with HTML

  • If you usually use the HMTL editor but there are formats that choke you and you want to know a simpler way to apply them. [19659006] If you're a geek that throws me out we use asterisks, pads and those old keys to edit text.
  • If you want to surprise friends by writing in Markdown.
  • If you are in these previous assumptions, or some other that you can think of, then activate the new module, Markdown is for you and you must know the basic syntax to start creating texts with weird markers. So Mark marks the most common and useful Markdown :

    Markdown Result

JetPack 2.8 introduces bookmarks, eliminates Quancast and more

     markdown-wordpress "width =" 500 "height =" 403 "class =" aligncenter size-medium wp-image-74272 "srcset = " 500w, png 600w "sizes =" (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px "/> </a></p>
<p> The new version of the JetPack plugin has improved some modules and introduced other changes, but the most important thing is the incorporation of the new module of bookmarks of text, known as <em> Markdown </em> and the elimination of Quancast cookies. </p>
<p> The most relevant changes, consequently, are the elimination of Quancast cookies, which performed statistical analysis aimed at marketing, extracted data of the JetPack statistics module, so <a href= one less problem with cookies since the statistics module of JetPack itself does not use cookies unlike Google Analytics.

But perhaps the most striking is the adoption of the text formatting system by markup, or Markdown a system inherited from the old systems used in forums years ago or on Tumblr, which allows the writer to apply formats without using the visual icons but without having to resort to HTML .

For this, it incorporates an improved version of Markdown which adds HTML compatibility improvements, much more tables.

     markdown "width =" 500 "height =" 239 "class =" alignnone size-medium wp-image- 74269 "srcset =" 500w, png 600w "sizes =" (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px "/> </a></p>
<p> Personally I do not like it, it's more, I do not think it's an advance but a setback, but it's a question n tastes, and when you have an audience while a guide to using Markdown in WordPress. At the moment you can activate it if you want to try it in entries and pages, and <a href= here is a quick reference guide .

Returning to the changes in this version 2.8 of JetPack, the warning system has also been improved of the monitor, support of custom entry types in the Release module, with only a small change in the code .

Other changes are improvements in the infinite scroll, a new filter to disable embedded in the comments , improvements in the forms, personalization of headers of the gravatar widget and many others .
