SubV – Spanish subversion client

Hector Casado, a young developer, computer science student at the University of Salamanca, tells me about a Mac client for subversion ] SubV which he has created as an end-of-career work, which is great news as there is hardly any subversion client for Mac (I up to now the only reliable one that I used svnX and less free.

Of course, I downloaded it and I'm testing it for a while, and it's leaving a great taste in my mouth, not only because of the stability and reliability It is resulting, but especially, because of the pleasant and easy to use user interface that it offers, not only because of this in Spanish, which is appreciated, but also because the way of working is very simple. you can download here .

Special mention it deserves the history window, which shows the logs and diffs of each file, folder and / or repository, in a more than good, exemplary way. You just have to choose a file or folder, click on the history icon and in the new window you can navigate through the different versions and check the differences. Just great.

Well, the best thing is that you try it, I like it a lot, and I could not help but share it with you and, in the process, thank Hector for his great work.

I leave you some captures but the best thing is that you try it …

And, of course, if you are not yet decided, you can continue entangling in the WordPress 2.7 demo

Update WordPress with Subversion • WordPress Help

I have wanted to publish this article for a long time, not only because I has already asked for a user of the forum but because I consider which is a fundamental piece, although not trivial, of the knowledge of WordPress and its update .

Subversion is a version control software that allows you to update a system from files hosted on another server and in an unattended way, let's configure it and Subversion takes care of updating.

There is a very good article in the WordPress.org Codex but I'm going to share what which works in our case and we have used, for example, for the WordPress Demo site 2.6. It is also a very fast method that your readers will not even know about the version change.

Connect to your server by SSH

The first thing you need is to be able to access your server by SSH . If you do not know how to do it, check with your provider to see if you have access. If you can not access the Secure Shell (SSH) forget, this article "still" is not for you.

Install Subversion

You know that some time ago we migrated to an accommodation MediaTemple DV and, in spite of its many virtues, it turns out that it has not installed Subversion by default. As novices we were, and still are, in the management of servers, it cost us a couple of queries to the technical service to discover that we could install it just by activating what MediaTemple calls in the housing panel " Developer Tools ".

Surely, if you are hosted in another hosting you will have to do it in another way, ask your provider, do not waste time searching.

Configuring a Subversion receiver

For of this tutorial we will assume that your WordPress installation you want to update is in the folder: "/ Blog /"

Start the fun!

Once you have connected to your server through SSH (in MediaTemple it is accessed from the control panel of Plesk -> Virtuozzo ) you have to create a temporary directory, which we call here " svn ] ", Where I will configure s our receiver (this varies depending on your configuration):

In the previous command we changed to the root folder, created the "wp" directory and went to that folder later. [19659004] Now we download with l Subversion commands the latest version of WordPress (currently 2.5.1):

Once downloaded, and to avoid later problems, we will erase all the contents of the "wp-content" folder, remember that this is where we store our uploaded files, plugins, etc. We will do it like this:

Now let's copy everything the personal content of our blog located in the "WordPress" folder, that is, the plugins, templates, uploaded files, etc:

Next we rename the old WordPress folder to another name, and to the new one we put it the name of the old one:

That's it! . Now check that everything works well in your blog, and if something goes wrong you just have to go back and recover your previous folder by doing the previous commands backwards:

From this moment you can easily update using the following command ( changing the part "2.5.1" to that of the appropriate version, of course):

I know it seems somewhat complicated, especially if you have no practice with the use of terminal interfaces, but surely if you have ever used MS-DOS, Linux or Terminal of Mac OS X you will not have problems (although surprisingly you can still find some DOS course) and, above all, it is worth the effort.

In addition to this name change, you will be able to verify that there is some other change, such as the word count in the writing panel …

I already have the translation of WordPress 2.6 Spanish in half so I have to run to have it ready by the day of publication.
